Testing & live data
PremiumStudio → Overlays → Testing & live data14 settings3 min read
You never have to wait for a real raid to see if your alert works. The Event simulator at the bottom of the canvas sends fake events through the real live feed — so the editor and OBS react exactly like they will on stream. Separately, the top bar's Test data / Live data switch decides what the canvas shows while you design.
How it works#
- Simulated events are labelled as system events, so Replay real events never replays them.
- Because test events use the live feed, OBS reacts too — handy to check sound levels in OBS before you go live.
- Test data only changes the editor preview (fake events, chat, stats and a song). It never reaches OBS.
Before you start#
An overlay open in the editor.
Set it up#
Part 1Stress-test your overlay5 steps
Open the editor
On the Overlays tab, click an overlay's thumbnail or its Edit button.
Open the simulator
Click Event simulator at the bottom of the canvas.
One event
Event Bits, Name PixelPanda, Count / amount 500, Message GG! → Send.
A busy moment
Click Burst ×10: ten mixed events, 0.4 s apart.
Real ones
Click Replay real events to replay your last 5 real events.
The status line shows e.g. 10 mixed events sent and your alert box works through its queue.
Every setting explained#
Event simulator
| Event | Follower, Subscriber, Gift sub, Bits, Raid, Channel points, Donation. |
| Name | The viewer name used (max 60 characters). |
| Count / amount | For Subscriber (months), Gift sub (count), Bits, Raid (viewers) and Donation (amount, in EUR). |
| Message / Reward | For Bits and Donation the message; for Channel points the reward name. |
| Send | Sends one event. |
| Burst ×10 | Ten mixed events with different names and amounts, 0.4 s apart — tests your alert queue and hype meter. |
| Replay real events | Replays your 5 most recent real events (oldest first). Shows No real events to replay yet if there aren't any. |
| Chat message | Sends the Name + Message as a chat message — tests the chatbox. |
Preview data (top bar)
| Test data | A believable fake stream: recent events, chat lines, Twitch numbers and a song, so every widget looks filled while you design. |
| Live data | Your real latest events and chat. When you're live: a red dot and live · N viewers; offline: your last events and chat. |
Per-widget test buttons
In the inspector, above the widget settings.
| Test | Event widgets: pick an event type and fire a TestUser event. |
| Send (chatbox) | Sends a test chat line. |
| Test Discord join / Test emote rain | For the Discord activity and emote rain widgets. |
| Play now (Media Share) | Plays one media item on stream. |
Good to know#
Test with OBS open: you'll hear exactly how loud your alert sounds are compared to your game and mic.
The OBS Control panel also has Test follower, Test sub, Test bits, Test raid and Test donation buttons — see OBS panels.
Troubleshooting#
Nothing happens when I send a test
Check the wifi icon in the top bar is green (live feed connected) and that the relevant alert is on in the Alert designer.
OBS doesn't react to tests, the editor does
OBS shows the published version. Publish first, and make sure the browser source uses this overlay's link.
